please see the membership page , where you can join on-line. members' referendum on new amendments to constitution and bylaws the society's council is recommending a number of new amendments to the society's constitution and bylaws; these need to be approved by members to come into effect. members will shortly be receiving emails enabling them to vote. the proposed amendments include a change of name to the society, to the international coral reef society , which in a previous informal consultation was supported by approximately 80% of those members who responded. as several older members pointed out, the current name of the society (isrs) was chosen to encourage membership by researchers primarily interested in reefs of non-coral origin. however, the society now has only a handful of such members, while it is believed large numbers of people interested in coral reefs are discouraged from joining by the non-inclusion of the term “coral reefs” in the name. the other proposed amendments are: to the date when subscriptions fall due – to ease the task of subscription renewal to the election of ordinary councilors – to encouarge the election of council members representing different global regions to the membership of the council – so that the chairs of the society’s principal committees and chapters serve ex-officio as council members to permit the president to serve two terms and then serve one term ex-officio on the council – to promote continuity between one president and the next to replace officers or members of council who have not participated for a year or more – to ensure the effective management of the society. members are urged to vote promptly on receiving their voter emails. a two-thirds majority of at least 40% of members is required to approve the constitutional changes. full details of the proposed amendments are shown on the society's constitution wepage . 18th july 2018 (ro) new isrs coral reef conservation award the council of the society is pleased to announce that the inaugural isrs coral reef conservation award is awarded to: dr. rodney (rod) v. salm (senior advisor emeritus, the nature conservancy, kailua, hawaii, usa) in recognition of a career-long record of achievements in tropical marine conservation. 30th may 2018 (ro) 2018 isrs honors and awards following the receipt of nominations earlier in the year, the council of the society has approved the award of the following honors: eminence-in-science award: two awards to professor rolf p. m. bak (netherlands institute for sea research, den burg, netherlands) and dr. james w. porter (odum school of ecology, university of georgia, athens, georgia, usa) isrs mid-career award to: professor joshua e. cinner (arc centre of excellence in coral reef studies, james cook university, townsville, queensland, australia) isrs world reef award to: dr. ranjeet bhagooli (faculty of ocean studies, university of mauritius, mauritius) isrs fellow status (fisrs): philip munday (arc centre of excellence in coral reef studies, james cook university, townsville, queensland, australia), andrew hoey (arc centre of excellence in coral reef studies, james cook university, townsville, queensland, australia) and sue wells (cambridge, england, uk). in addition, the recipients of the above-listed awards automatically achieve isrs fellow status. the council congratulations all the successful awardees, and offers its thanks to all who participated in the nomination process. 29th may 2018 (r.o.) icrs 2020 website goes live the webpages for the 14th international coral reef symposium - icrs 2020 - to be held in bremen, germany, over 5th-10th july, 2020, are now active and can be accessed here . earlybird registration does not open until july 2019, but members will from now on be able to follow preparations and check details via the icrs 2020 website as well as the associated facebook page ( https://www.facebook.com/icrs2020 ) and twitter account ( https://twitter.com/icrs2020 ). key details will also be posted on the icrs 2020 page in the conferences and meetings section of the isrs website. 6th february 2018 (ro) new issue of coral reefs available isrs and springer are pleased to announce that the latest issue of the society's academic journal, coral reefs (volume 37 number 1) is now available on-line. a list of contents is available here: coral reefs contents volume 37 number 1 . members may access the journal and download any or all of the papers free of charge by logging in to their membership account on the membership services page . 5th february 2018 (ro) new isrs coral reef conservation award to mark both its concern for the dramatic global decline in the health of coral reefs and the third international year of the reef (iyor-2018) the international society for reef studies is pleased to announce the inauguration of a new award – the isrs coral reef conservation award. up to two awards will be given annually to members who have made over a period of some years a regionally or globally significant contribution to the protection of coral reefs. this award will include a cash prize of $2500 to be spent at the awardee’s discretion on their own coral reef related activities. nominations will be assessed in recognition of achievements in one or more of the following fields : the establishment and / or management of marine protected areas, the securing at a national or regional scale of other significant measures directed at protecting coral reefs, the promotion through environmental education of widespread public awareness of the need to conserve coral reefs, research into the scientific, social and/or environmental economic aspects of coral reef protection and management, research into or achievement of effective coral reef restoration. there is no educational requirement for this award, but a nomination must include in the submission documents or the nominee’s c.v. sufficient detail to enable the judging panel to assess the application fairly. to be eligible for this award, a nominee should be a current paid-up member of the society and have been a member of the society for minimum sum of three (3) years (either continuously or with breaks). further details of the nomination process can be found on the society awards and honors page at: http://coralreefs.org/society-awards-and-grants/awards-fellowships/ . full details of the award can also be downloaded here: coral reef co
